There are a number of reasons why LPL 2022, one of the most awaited domestic tournaments in Sri Lanka, will be played at two venues: the RPICS, Colombo, and the MRICS, Hambantota for the first time.
It is expected that the initial games of the 5-team tournament will be played at RPICS, Colombo, while the games will be played at MRICS, Hambantota later on in the tournament. It is with great pleasure that we announce the 3rd edition of the Lanka Premier League, which has already started to bring global attention as a formidable competition that will have a place in the world of T20 leagues,” says Shammi Silva, President of Sri Lanka Cricket.
The tournament in total will play 24 matches, and registration of international players for the Player Draft of the ‘Lanka Premier League’ (LPL 2022) will start shortly.
On August 21, Kandy Warriors, Dambulla Giants, Colombo Stars, Galle Gladiators, and Jaffna Kings are going to participate in the 20-over competition, which will be played between five teams. In the upcoming season of the tournament, a total of 24 matches will be played in Colombo and Hambantota, with the entire tournament taking place in Colombo and Hambantota.
The first edition of the LPL tournament was played in 2020 after being postponed several times by SLC since the tournament was founded back in 2018. There has been no doubt that Jaffna Kings (Jaffna Stallions in 2020) has been the most successful team in the league as they have won both editions of the tournament in the past two years.
The highest run-getter in the tournament is Danushka Gunathilaka, while the highest wicket-taker is Wanindu Hasaranga. There are seven half-centuries to Gunathilaka’s name and he has amassed 702 runs in 20 matches at a strike rate of 139.56, scoring six half-centuries during his career.
Similarly, Hasaranga has taken 28 wickets from 20 games at an economy rate of 5.98, with his best performance being 3/15 from 20 games.
