WWE NXT 2.0 July 19 Results, Winners, Grades, Reaction, and Highlights

In order for WWE NXT 2.0 to be successful, it needs new challengers. Due to the interference of Cora Jade, Mandy Rose managed to defeat Roxanne Perez last week.

During a 20 Woman Battle Royal that would be held on May 2nd, NXT would crown a new No. 1 contender that included such stars as Alba Fyre, Nikkita Lyons, Tiffany Stratton, Wendy Choo, Ivy Nile, and Elektra Lopez.

The NXT UK Tag Team Championships were on the line for Josh Briggs and Brooks Jensen to defend their titles in a competitive battle with former champions Kit Wilson and Elton Prince, Pretty Deadly, in the face of Fallon Henley’s plan to win the Battle Royal.

The rematch between Cameron Grimes and JD McDonagh took place after Cameron Grimes lost his title and failed to gain a shot at Bron Breakker to get a shot at the NXT Championship.

As the summer of important stories gripped us, this was just the beginning of a night that would continue NXT’s march forward.

Cameron Grimes vs. JD McDonagh WWE NXT 2.0 July 19

Result

McDonagh def. Grimes by pinfall.

Grade

B+

The match culminated in a victory for JD McDonagh who used a snap back suplex to capture the victory after trapping Cameron Grimes’ leg in the ropes during a hard-fought battle.

It is not surprising to those who are familiar with the work of McDonagh that this was an excellent opening. There was a fairly traditional face vs. heel dynamic between The Irish Ace and The Richest Man in NXT during this match as the Irish Ace attempted to target his leg.

The steady pace of the program was what made it work. There was a great opportunity for Grimes to fire back and nearly build a win before the cumulative effects of McDonagh’s attack proved to be too much to overcome. The right man won the election as he aims to challenge Bron Breakker in the upcoming election.

There seems to be no end to Grimes’ slump, but a new story appears to be in the works as Joe Gacy was shown watching closely during this match in order to find out what is next for him.

Moments of Notoriety

  • It was Gacy who appeared on the stage to watch Grimes perform. After the loss, he shook his head in disbelief.
  • The knee of Grimes was smashed against the steel post after McDonagh slammed it against it.

NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship champion Cora Jade throws her title in the trash during their match

Grade

C+

Cora Jade described herself as the true breakout Superstar of NXT, and she was very angry about the attention that was taken from her and given to Roxanne Perez in the process. Before tossing her NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship past her, she called it a remembrance of a failure that she had experienced.

Even though Jade is not the best promo, it is important to give her chances like this once in a while to test herself out. There is no doubt that the more chances she gets, the more she will be able to improve. This is her first chance to be a heel, and it will take some time for her to learn how to do it.

There was a purpose to this. The statement from Jade made it clear that she had turned on her friend out of jealousy and that she had disrespected the title that she and Perez had won together outright.

I hope that when Perez returns, she will be able to talk about what the tag titles mean to her, and what they mean to her. As a result, the image of the tag title in the trash remains an unfortunate chapter in the history of titles that have consistently struggled to survive in a competitive market.

Moments of Notoriety

  • During the first episode of NXT, a video package was presented highlighting Jade’s betrayal of Perez.
  • There was a lot of noise coming from the crowd throughout this promo, making it almost impossible for Jade to speak.
  • After the match, Xyon Quinn praised Jade backstage, followed by a challenge for Apollo Crews to challenge him next week to a match.

Roderick Strong vs. Damon Kemp

Result

Strong def. Kemp by pinfall.

Grade

C+

The veteran instincts of Roderick Strong were the key to him dominating Damon Kemp during the fight. A video was shown on the Titantron in which Tony D’Angelo showed his group defeating Diamond Mine with his group. Kemp was laid out with a high knee by Strong in the first round of the match, and he went on to take the victory.

Despite being a short match, this was a very good one that highlighted what Strong is good at. His young opponents were beaten down and dissected by him. While it would have been helpful if Kemp had gotten more offense before the ending, the ending was well done.

In spite of what he has done in the past, the Messiah of the Backbreaker still cares more about winning than helping his stablemates. There is a growing likelihood that even Kemp will turn against him in the near future. This dynamic will again be put to the test in the case of the D’Angelo Family vs. Diamond Mine.

Moments of Notoriety

  • After Kemp Speared Strong, he went for a powerbomb, but Strong escaped from Kemp Speared’s grasp and he connected with a clothesline instead.
  • As the fight continued to be held backstage, Strong reprimanded The Creed Brothers for getting jumped, then he stated that The D’Angelo Family would finish the fight with them.
  • There were several pre-recorded promos in which Nikkita Lyons, Tiffany Stratton, and Indi Hartwell all talked about what it would mean to them if they won the main event, Battle Royal.
  • The D’Angelo Family was challenged by Diamond Mine to participate in an eight-man tag tournament. In the end, The Don accepted after he discussed Elektra Lopez’s chances of winning the main event with Elektra Lopez.

NXT UK Tag Titles: Josh Briggs and Brooks Jensen (c) vs. Pretty Deadly

Result

Briggs and Jensen def. Pretty Deadly to retain the NXT UK Tag Team Championships.

Grade

B

As the fight started, Elton Prince and Kit Wilson dominated Brooks Jensen, but it was Josh Briggs who turned the tide of the fight. Pretty Deadly was trying to use the NXT UK Tag Team Championships to their advantage, but Fallon Henley stopped them, allowing the champions to hit a High-Low for the victory.

As you can see, this was a fun title bout with the different styles playing an important part in telling the story of the match. The action was controlled by Pretty Deadly while showcasing the explosive offense of the champions at the same time.

It should be noted that Pretty Deadly was somewhat protected by the messy finish, so it is possible for them to rematch at a later date. The NXT tag team divisions will always be remembered for the absolute MVPs, Prince and Wilson.

Moments of Notoriety

  • Before the match, Pretty Deadly made fun of the champions wearing cowboy hats on stage before the match. Henley hyped up Briggs and Jensen with the help of Briggs.
  • In an attempt to explain to Vic Joseph why Briggs and Jensen are not ideal representatives of the United Kingdom, Wade Barrett found himself having to explain to the crowd, which was chanting “USA”.
  • Henley was thrown to the ground by Prince outside and her left arm was injured as a result.
  • Having completed the purification of The Dyad, Joe Gacy showed the faces of James Drake and Zack Gibson, renaming them Jagger Reid and Rip Fowler as he did this.

JD McDonagh Threatens to Rip Off Bron Breakker’s Shoulder

Grade

C+

Breakker charged to the ring and stomped to the edge of it, demanding that JD McDonagh face him in the ring. On his way to the NXT Championship, the Irish Ace appeared on the titantron and promised that he would rip all eight muscles in his shoulder on the way to victory.

Between Breakker and McDonagh, it was pretty clear what the dynamic was between the two of them. In contrast to the champion, who is a no-nonsense fighter, The Irish Ace is a ruthless plotter who never backs down from a battle.

There was a promo segment where McDonagh talked circles around Breakker and it made the champion look illiterate and unintelligent, as he was speaking circles around him. Against McDonagh’s technical offense, the NXT champion will need to demonstrate he can be more than just the brutish brute that he has always been.

Moments of Notoriety

  • As Breakker arrived in the parking lot, he asked everyone where McDonagh was.
  • The video showed Von Wagner beating Solo Sikoa outside the Amway Arena in front of a large crowd.

Axiom vs. Dante Chen

Result

Axiom def. Chen by pinfall

Grade

D

Axiom sent Dante Chen stumbling around the ring as he stumbled around. With a double spinning kick along with a jumping kick, he finished him off.

There is a lot more to the former A-Kid than he appeared to be in this match. The way he appeared was like a wrestler learning to be a fighter, which did nothing for his unique technical style.

There is no doubt that if this is Axiom’s future, he will struggle to make an impression on the world. There is no question that he is not a traditional wrestler in the ring and that WWE has let go of many who would be better suited for the mask. As long as this isn’t completely lost in the gimmick, he might still be able to retain his own style.

Moments of Notoriety

  • Axiom’s entrance was enhanced by a unique motion blur effect that made him stand out from the crowd.
  • In an attempt to leave, Giovanni Vinci tried to get away from the Chase U bus, but he wasn’t able to.
  • There was a warning by Wes Lee that Grayson Waller and Trick Williams were going to be beaten. During Carmelo Hayes and Trick’s talk about the future of The Barbershop, they discussed their future plans.

20 Woman No. 1 Contender Battle Royal

Result

With his last elimination of Jade, Stark becomes the No. 1 contender for the NXT Women’s Championship in the 20 Woman Battle Royal.

Grade

B

In the Battle Royale, Zoey Stark was the surprise final entrant who emerged as the winner. The Toxic Attraction was watching the event from the Toxic Lounge. There was a shocking elimination of Nikkita Lyons by Tiffany Stratton. Stratton was eliminated by Stark after he ducked Cora Jade’s sneak attack in order to take her out and win the match.

There are certain ways in which every Battle Royal is a mess of a match in certain ways, and this was no exception. The number of women in this contest who did not have the necessary experience was too high. There was however a smart way in which the match was constructed around the key rivalries within the division.

Despite the fact that the final stretch was surprisingly tight, there were several surprises to be found. The fact that Stratton eliminated Lyons at the end opened the door for an interesting rivalry between the two. Lyons was the odds-on favorite. Following a long recovery period, it was well deserved for Stark to take it all, and she is an ideal opponent to take down Mandy Rose in the future.

Moments of Notoriety

  • A few pre-taped promos showed Lyons, Stratton, Indi Hartwell, and Lash Legend all talking about what it would mean to them if they won the Battle Royale in the main event.
  • It was revealed that Toxic Attraction wanted Tatum Paxley to win before Ivy Nile, Kiana James, and Alba Fyre each called their own shot at Rose.
  • The brawl continued outside after Fyre and Legend eliminated each other early on in the fight.
  • At ringside, Choo managed to save herself from elimination by using a pillow. Her own cup was later used by Stratton to blast her to death in an effort to eliminate her.
  • In a bid to eliminate multiple women, Katana Chance and Kayden Carter worked together, but Nile was able to get them into positions where Lyons would be able to eliminate both of them at the same time.
